Woman Walking on I-5 in Los Angeles Struck and Killed by Homeland Security Officer

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 19, 2021) – Early in the morning on Wednesday, a woman who was walking on I-5 in Los Angeles was struck and killed by a Department of Homeland Security officer in an unmarked vehicle. The August 18 crash occurred in the freeway’s southbound lanes, near Hyperion Avenue and to the north of it in the Silver Lake area.
The time was roughly 2:00 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Authorities said the unmarked Department of Homeland Security vehicle–described as a Dodge Durango–had been traveling in the left lane, and struck the pedestrian.
The victim was killed in the crash. She was identified only as 40 years old. Her name has not been reported.
The driver remained at the crash site. Officer Patrick Kimball, who is with the California Highway Patrol, identified the driver as Nicholas A. Desimone, 32 years old. Desimone is an officer with Homeland Security.
Investigators are working to understand why the victim was walking on the freeway. They are collecting details and information about the crash.
