Pedestrian Struck and Killed by L.A. City Vehicle on 170 Freeway in North Hollywood

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA (June 2, 2022) – Late at night on Tuesday in North Hollywood, a pedestrian was struck and killed on the 170 Freeway. The May 31 crash occurred on the northbound side of the freeway, close to where Victory Boulevard is located.
The time was roughly 10:30 p.m., Los Angeles Police said.
According to authorities, the driver–who is the director of the Crisis Response Team for Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti–had been traveling on the freeway in a vehicle owned by the city when the vehicle hit the pedestrian.
The pedestrian was killed in the crash. The identity of the person, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.
Reports do not say why the person was walking on the freeway.
The driver remained at the crash site, and he later went to the hospital. The injuries he suffered have not been reported.
The driver was identified as Joseph Avalos.
Investigators are working to collect information to understand the crash and its circumstances.
