Pedestrian Killed near Placentia Ave. in Costa Mesa; Suspect Driver is Arrested

COSTA MESA, CA (January 6, 2022) – Late at night on Tuesday in Costa Mesa, a pedestrian was struck and killed. The January 4 crash occurred close to where Placentia Avenue and Victoria Street intersect.
The time was roughly 11:30 p.m., Costa Mesa Police said.
According to police, when they arrived at the crash site, they saw a traffic light had been knocked down and a vehicle was burning. Authorities said they believe the vehicle struck the pedestrian who had been waiting to walk across the street.
The pedestrian was killed in the crash. The person’s identity–including name, age, gender, and city of residence–has not been reported.
The driver was able to exit the vehicle. Responders transported him for medical attention.
Police arrested the driver, who was later identified as Jon Scott Weir. Reports say authorities believe Weir was under the influence of drugs when he was driving at the time the fatal crash occurred.
Investigators are continuing their work.
