Glenn Howard Owens Killed in Avila Beach Crash involving Driver Suspected of DUI

AVILA BEACH, CA (August 12, 2021) – Glenn Howard Owens was identified by the California Highway Patrol as the person who was killed in a crash in Avila Beach involving a driver suspected of DUI. Owens was a resident of Atascadero, 72 years old.

The August 6 crash occurred in the area of Apple Orchard Lane and San Luis Bay Drive.

The time was roughly 3:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

Owens was heading north on San Luis Bay Drive in a Mercedes. According to witnesses, reports say, a vehicle–described as a Ford F-250–which had been traveling south, went into the lane of opposing traffic.

The Ford and the Mercedes collided head on.

Responders arrived and pronounced Owens deceased at the crash site. Responders transported a passenger who had been traveling with him to a hospital in the area.

She suffered injuries that were described as major. She was later identified as Susan Margaret Owens, a resident of Atascadero, 65 years old.

Authorities arrested the person who had been driving the Ford on suspicion of driving under the influence.

He was identified as Patrick W. McDuffee II, a resident of Nipomo, 31 years old.

Investigators are continuing their work on the incident.
