Driver Smashes into Gas Station Pump, Causing Explosion in Orange

ORANGE, CA (September 22, 2021) – Early in the morning on Tuesday in Orange, a driver smashed into a gas station, causing an explosion and damage. The September 21 crash occurred at the Chevron gas station, located on the corner of Chapman Avenue and Main Street.
The time was roughly 2:00 a.m., according to the Orange Fire Department.
A vehicle–which has not been described–veered off the roadway, flew over a curb, and smashed into a gas pump at the station. Reports say the sequence was recorded on video from a surveillance camera.
An employee of the gas station–identified as Angelita Robles–said she heard the driver screaming when she came out of the building to shut the gas off. She called for help.
Responders arrived and transported the driver to the hospital for treatment. The types of injuries he suffered, and his current condition, are not known. He has not been identified in reports.
Significant damage occurred in the incident, reports say, with the front part of the vehicle torn apart in the explosion. The extent of damage to the gas station has not been described.
Investigators are working to understand why the vehicle went out of the driver’s control, and what led to the crash.
