Woman Dies, Children Injured in Encino Wrong-way Crash on 101 Freeway

ENCINO, CA (August 13, 2021) – Early in the evening on Thursday in Encino, a wrong-way crash on the 101 Freeway killed a woman and injured five other victims, four of whom are children. The August 12 crash occurred on the southbound side of the freeway, close to where the 405 Freeway is located.
The time was roughly 7:10 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
A vehicle–described as a Lincoln Navigator, white in color–was reported to have been traveling the wrong way on the freeway, heading north in the lanes that head south. The SUV collided head on with a tractor-trailer in the area of the freeway near Haskell Avenue.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, a woman who had been traveling in the SUV died at the crash site. She was identified only as in her twenties. Her name and city of residence have not been reported.
Responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department transported four children and one adult to a hospital in the area.
According to reports, when officers arrived on site, the driver is alleged to have attempted to leave the scene on foot. The driver is alleged to have argued with officers as they approached him.
He is also alleged to have assaulted the CHP officers, who restrained him. He was later identified as Cesar Iban Torres, a resident of Los Angeles, 31 years old.
The person who had been driving the big rig was identified as Jose Garcia Lopez, a resident of San Diego, 56 years old. Reports say he was injured in the crash.
Investigators are continuing their work on the crash details.
